Building your own solar panel can be easy.
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
To explain this, let’s think of solar panels as a box that holds solar cells together. In some scientific way, electricity is created by the solar cells from sunlight. The rays of the sun which strike the solar cells, which are made of silicone, will generate electricity upon contact. Although the energy comes freely from the sun, less than 1 V of electricity per cell is generated which means a lot of panels are needed to replace your energy needs. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. For those of you that are not very handy with tools, it is recommended that you obtain help from your family that can help you with sawing and soldering wires.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
Solder on your diode before you attach it to batteries. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. Lastly make sure that you are not wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. For many who believed it impossible or expensive to tackle this task it’s often surprising to see just how inexpensive building your own solar panel really can become. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
