Read this article to learn how to build your own solar panel.
The sun is by far the most powerful source of energy for our planet; did you know that in only an hour the earth can receive enough energy from the sun to meet our power needs for a whole year? Today, we’re learning more sophisticated ways to benefit from the sun; solar energy is often the cheapest way to provide energy for our homes. Luckily, homeowners can take advantage of this energy with the help of solar panel systems that convert this energy into electricity.
Using a solar panel system means you will be self reliant for your power, so you won’t need to rely on the public power grid, which is an excellent benefit. You will at the very least be able to save on your electricity bills, and you may even be able to drastically reduce them. Additionally, the government may buy any surplus electricity you produce which means that you can get paid for it. But even if this doesn’t happen where you live, you’ll still make big savings from installing solar panels.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. Having your batteries power your solar panels is a waste of energy. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary. While you will need to have some DIY skills to be able to make your own solar panels, it isn’t as difficult as many people think. If you are serious about saving money, this is a project easy enough for even the novice to complete once the materials are rounded up and the patience to succeed is wrangled into production.
