Solar Panels – Why And How They Function
Before electricity and central heating, the sun was the only source of energy for the earth and this was enough to allow human civilization to flourish. While this form of energy arrives as heat and light, that doesn’t mean it can’t be converted into a usable form of energy. Modern solar panels enable you to create electricity in a simple and cost effective manner.
All you have to do is mount a solar panel on the roof of your home to enjoy the benefits of free energy, for powering electrical appliances, lighting your home and even heating water. This can allow you to cut back on many of your bills such as electricity, gas or oil.
While there is a cost involved to actually install solar panels, this can be offset by rebates or tax breaks that are available in many places. Solar panels are also getting less expensive as more people use them and the systems are getting more efficient. If you do the job of installing solar panels yourself, then you’ll be able to benefit from energy independence without even having a high up front cost.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells.
Without a doubt, solar panels are definitely the future for producing energy in the home, not just because they’re cost-effective but they’re also good for the environment. So, you can save more money by installing them sooner rather than later.
