Don’t Think Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Too Difficult For You
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Where energy is concerned this “green energy” known as solar energy will likely outlive many other energy sources according to experts and it’s ability to avoid negative impact on the environment makes it that much more appealing to those of us who are environmentally conscious. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
It is not that difficult to build your own solar panels. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. To attach your solar cells to the wooden container you can use caulk. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
If you want to install solar panels, you first have to calculate how many hours of sunlight you get on average. You have to choose between two kinds of solar panels: concentrating and non-concentrating solar collectors.
Since concentrating solar collectors are able to absorb lots of sunlight directly, they are the best choice if you live somewhere that gets quite a bit of sunshine all year. Not everyone lives in a place that gets a lot of direct sunlight, though, and for anyone in this category a non-concentrating solar collector, which can absorb sunlight from reflection as well as directly, is the perfect choice. If you have any doubt about which type would work best for you home, you should ask someone with experience in this field.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will also need to put some wood inside the box to hold the cells and plexiglass to cover the box. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder.
There has never been a more ideal time to use solar energy, as heating and other utility costs soar and the state of the economy remains uncertain. In this day and age, you can feel safer knowing that your energy needs don’t depend on things like oil, gas or coal being affordable or even available at all.
