Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think
To cut cost, more and more people are turning to solar energy. However, some are worried that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, even though it is an expense that would quickly be offset by savings made on the electricity bill. Building your own solar panels for half the price is good news. While this article can’t possibly provide a comprehensive guide to building your own solar panel, we will look at some of the most important aspects.
One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. In some scientific way, electricity is created by the solar cells from sunlight. The process itself involves photons hitting electrons in the silicone material on the solar cells, which become electricity. Although the energy comes freely from the sun, less than 1 V of electricity per cell is generated which means a lot of panels are needed to replace your energy needs. The thought of being able to eliminate your electric bill is what causes many people to make solar panels on their own with the hope of replacing all of their electrical needs. DIY experts will probably have no problem at all creating their very own solar panels at home as long as you have a soldering iron.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
The only connections that you will need will be for the battery. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. Sometime during the night you could be wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. It will not take that long to get your solar panel up and running and powering you entire home with sunlight.
