Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think
The reason that solar panels is so popular today is that the sun is an endless source of energy that we can rely upon. Well, not for the next 4 billion years at least, which is how long the sun is expected to live. Clean energy, as solar energy is referred to, is relatively cheap to invest into because of the rebates and incentives that are offered. But how exactly do solar panels work? By the end of this article, you will understand.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. All you need is some basic tools, an imagination, and the internet to create your own less expensive version of solar panels to achieve the same effect. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. You may want to consider having wood glue and silicone caulking handy in order to be able to assemble your wooden box and attach your solar panel cells to it. If you have a 12 V battery, similar to those found in most vehicles, you are in luck as these are necessary to store the electricity generated by solar panels. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. You can save hundreds of dollars by finding low-cost or free batteries in your area. Once the battery has stored enough electricity, you can use the energy by hooking up a power inverter to convert it to AC. If you already have a modified sine wave or true sine wave power inverter, you can use this energy. A true sine wave inverter is the only device that will give you the same AC electricity that comes out of your sockets. By spending a few extra dollars on the right inverter, you will be able to use your electricity in your home.
The diodes should be soldered before you attach your panels to the batteries. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. Having your batteries power your solar panels is a waste of energy. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller.
All it takes to build your own solar panel is a little skill with the tools. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
