Understanding How Solar Panels Work

No energy source created by humans can compare to the sun, which all life on this planet depends on for survival. We obviously depend on the sun to heat our planet, but there are actually many diverse ways this energy can be harnessed for our daily use. Modern solar panels enable you to create electricity in a simple and cost effective manner.

The solar energy panels are quite expensive initially, making this a major consideration for many, who may be skeptical of the savings over time. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment.

Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.

A component, the charge controller, must be placed between the solar panel and the battery for the following reasons. To make sure your batteries do not explode, or receive the wrong level of voltage while charging, you need to have these devices hooked up. It also controls the direction of the flow of electricity from the solar panel to the battery and only in that direction. They also act like a resistor not allowing the batteries to be overcharged.

Anyone can built a solar panel if you have some skills with tools. Using your home built solar panels you could be powering your entire home with sunlight.
