Understanding How Solar Panels Work
In an effort to cut energy costs, more and more people are using solar energy. Installing solar panels will be high, but the expense will quickly be off set by the amount you will be saving on your electric bill. There is good news about building solar panels. This article has some of the most important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
The main reason statistically speaking, that more people have not made the switch yet is the high cost of the panels for solar energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
Everything required to build solar panels can be found on the internet or at a home improvement store, so you may want to think about doing it yourself. If you want your solar panels to give you the maximum efficiency, you have to start out with good quality solar cells. You’ll get more power from superior solar cells of course.
On average, 80 solar cells will produce about 100 watts of electricity. Considering this you can now determine how large to make your solar panels and how many of them you need to power your home. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
