Building your own solar panel can be easy.

The reason that solar panels is so popular today is that the sun is an endless source of energy that we can rely upon. Well, not for the next 4 billion years at least, which is how long the sun is expected to live. Low cost energy can definitely originate from solar panels, especially if you can work with companies that offer rebates and rewards prior to installation. So how do solar panels really work? Well, read on to find out.

Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. Do It Yourself skills are important if you are looking to build your own solar panel. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. Before you glue your solar panels in place you will have to solder tab on, if you are unable to find panels that have the tabs on them.

Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.

Solder on your diode before you attach it to batteries. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. On the other hand, if you are using a charge controller then this step is not necessary.

It only takes some skills with tools and anyone can build a solar panel. It will not take that long to get your solar panel up and running and powering you entire home with sunlight.
