How Solar Panels Can Save You Money
Because of the state of the global economy, many people are turning to solar energy. Some people may be thinking that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, but the expense will be quickly offset by savings made on the electricity bill. The good news is that you can actually build your own solar panels for half the price. While this article can’t possibly provide a comprehensive guide to building your own solar panel, we will look at some of the most important aspects.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. If you know how to use a soldering iron and are handy with a saw you can build your own solar panels in no time. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. To avoid wasting energy make sure that your solar panels are sending power to your batteries and not the other way around. This is not a necessary step when you choose to use a charge controller instead.
Solar panel systems are most certainly the future of energy production for people’s homes, not just for the reason that they’re cost-effective, but also because they have a positive impact on the environment. So, the sooner you get them installed, the more money you can save on electricity.
