How Solar Panels Can Save You Money

In the future solar energy will be the main source our consumable energy. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.

One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. The conversion of simple sunlight by the solar cells is how they create electricity. The rays of the sun which strike the solar cells, which are made of silicone, will generate electricity upon contact. Although the energy comes freely from the sun, less than 1 V of electricity per cell is generated which means a lot of panels are needed to replace your energy needs. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. However, you do need to be handy with a soldering iron and a saw, so if you aren’t really into DIY, maybe you should ask a friend who is for help.

This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.

If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells. While you will need to have some DIY skills to be able to make your own solar panels, it isn’t as difficult as many people think. This is a task that only requires patience, materials and perseverance to succeed in making your own solar panel to save energy.
