How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
The reason that solar panels is so popular today is that the sun is an endless source of energy that we can rely upon. The sun is estimated by scientists last for billions of years, clearly showing this energy source is trustworthy. Several companies are now offering incentives that slash the costs of solar panels allowing most people to benefit from this cheap energy source. So how do solar panels really work? By the end of this article, you will understand.
The solar energy panels are quite expensive initially, making this a major consideration for many, who may be skeptical of the savings over time. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
A nifty device that sits between the battery and the solar panel is called the charge controller. It is an essential component because it ensures that the voltage running into the battery is at the right level and it also ensures that the batteries don’t overcharge. Proper flow of your electricity from the solar panel to the battery, but not vice versa, is handled by these components. They also act like a resistor not allowing the batteries to be overcharged.
Solar panels give you a cheap power alternative that can serve you well in difficult economic times and ever rising utility costs. Solar energy gives you a viable option that frees you from being dependent on the power companies, no matter what happens in the future.
