Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment. You need to be able to hook up your solar panel, once it is finished, to a 12 V battery to store the energy. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. Some institutions provide these batteries for free which is something you should look into if you are going to need a lot of them. This electricity needs to be converted, so you will need to have a power inverter to convert the energy to be used around your house. If you already have a modified sine wave or true sine wave power inverter, you can use this energy. More than likely, you will want to use your appliances at home which requires purchasing a true sine wave inverter to convert electricity. By spending a few extra dollars on the right inverter, you will be able to use your electricity in your home.
Batteries will need to be connected and you may want to solder a diode first. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. You must place solar panels on top of your building or home so that they can receive sunlight and power your home at the same time. Another versatile use for solar panels is to have them power heaters for your home to cut back on your energy bill.
