How to Build Your Own Solar Panel

Solar panels have many advantages, especially since they provide clean energy by harnessing the natural elements of the planet. An added bonus is the fact that they’re a renewable energy source, so it’s not a resource that will run out. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.

Solar panels are not that difficult to build at home. Do It Yourself skills are important if you are looking to build your own solar panel. To build your own solar panels you will need just a few basic items. Caulk should be used to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place. If you have a 12 V battery, similar to those found in most vehicles, you are in luck as these are necessary to store the electricity generated by solar panels. No need to be fancy; just find an ordinary lead acid battery for this particular job. Some institutions provide these batteries for free which is something you should look into if you are going to need a lot of them. Storing electricity is only part of the process; you must convert this electricity into AC to be used at home or in your garage. This means you should get a true sine wave or modified energy converter. More than likely, you will want to use your appliances at home which requires purchasing a true sine wave inverter to convert electricity. Of course, these models are more expensive than their modified counterparts, are well worth the cost.

If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. Solar panels are generally mounted on the roofs of homes or buildings and can be used to power anything from a single appliance to your entire home. Likewise, solar panels can also be connected to the heating system and you can then heat your home with the help of solar power.
