Install Solar Panels to Cut Costs
Solar power is an amazing form of clean energy because it is relatively inexpensive and will never run out. The sun is estimated by scientists last for billions of years, clearly showing this energy source is trustworthy. Clean energy, as solar energy is referred to, is relatively cheap to invest into because of the rebates and incentives that are offered. The big question is how do these solar panels actually operate? The following paragraphs will provide this explanation.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Because the wood will shrink and expand with the weather, you should use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. Solar cells can be damaged if the wood shifts, that is why you need to use a dot of caulk. To make sure that no moisture gets in make sure that you fill the hole with caulk after you have pushed the wires through. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. So, you can soon have your own solar panel up and running and you might even end up powering your entire home with sunlight.
