The Benefits of Solar Panel Systems
Solar panels offer many benefits because they create clean energy by using the natural elements of our planet. Plus, they are an energy source that’s renewable, so they will never stop producing energy which is great. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.
The main reason statistically speaking, that more people have not made the switch yet is the high cost of the panels for solar energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. You may want to consider having wood glue and silicone caulking handy in order to be able to assemble your wooden box and attach your solar panel cells to it.
This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells.
When you look at economic conditions and how expensive oil and other traditional energy sources are getting, doesn’t it makes sense to seek alternatives? In this day and age, you can feel safer knowing that your energy needs don’t depend on things like oil, gas or coal being affordable or even available at all.
