How Solar Panels Can Save You Money
With the state of the global economy, more and more people are turning to solar energy. However, some are worried that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, even though it is an expense that would quickly be offset by savings made on the electricity bill. Building your own solar panels for half the price is good news. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. You will have to have some “Do It Yourself” skills, to build your own solar panels. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. To attach your solar cells to the wooden container you can use caulk. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
If you want to install solar panels, you first have to calculate how many hours of sunlight you get on average. This is because there are two types of solar panels, namely concentrating solar collectors and non-concentrating collectors.
If you get enough sunlight all year, a concentrating solar collector would be ideal for you, as these can make good use of direct sunlight. Non-concentrating solar collectors are able to absorb sunlight both directly and from reflection, making them ideal for areas that receive a lot less direct sunlight. If you still aren’t sure what type is best for you, you always have the option of consulting a professional.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering. You will indeed need to have some do it yourself know how to complete this task but it’s not nearly as difficult as most people thought. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
