You Might Think Building A Solar Panel Is Difficult, Think Again
Many people are switching to solar energy because it is less expensive to develop and its energy source comes from the sun. The sun is estimated by scientists last for billions of years, clearly showing this energy source is trustworthy. Low cost energy can definitely originate from solar panels, especially if you can work with companies that offer rebates and rewards prior to installation. Exactly how do solar panels generate electricity? Well, read on to find out.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. You will have to have some “Do It Yourself” skills, to build your own solar panels. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
Before you install any solar panels, you should do some research, as the kind you get should be based on how much sunlight your area gets. Whether you get a concentrating solar collector or a non-concentrating collector will depend on your needs.
Since concentrating solar collectors are able to absorb lots of sunlight directly, they are the best choice if you live somewhere that gets quite a bit of sunshine all year. If you don’t get that much sun, however, you can still benefit from solar power with a non-concentrating solar collector, which can operate from reflected as well as direct sunlight. If you still aren’t sure what type is best for you, you always have the option of consulting a professional.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. This is a task that only requires patience, materials and perseverance to succeed in making your own solar panel to save energy.
