The Advantages of Using Solar Panel Systems
In an effort to cut energy costs, more and more people are using solar energy. Some people may be thinking that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, but the expense will be quickly offset by savings made on the electricity bill. If you build your own solar panels you could save up to half the cost. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
All you have to do is mount a solar panel on the roof of your home to enjoy the benefits of free energy, for powering electrical appliances, lighting your home and even heating water. Once these panels are installed, this energy won’t cost you anything, so you can save a lot on utility costs.
Most areas now offer tax incentives to help make it more affordable to install solar panels in your home. As this technology becomes more sophisticated, and more people are taking advantage of it, the costs are steadily declining. One of the best things about solar panels is that you can make them even more economical by installing them yourself, which will then free you from being dependent on the power companies.
This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other.
When you look at economic conditions and how expensive oil and other traditional energy sources are getting, doesn’t it makes sense to seek alternatives? In this day and age, you can feel safer knowing that your energy needs don’t depend on things like oil, gas or coal being affordable or even available at all.
