How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
Because of the state of the global economy, many people are turning to solar energy. Installing solar panels will be high, but the expense will quickly be off set by the amount you will be saving on your electric bill. It will cost you about half the price to build your own solar panels. Use this article as a guide to building your own solar panels.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. If you know how to use a soldering iron and are handy with a saw you can build your own solar panels in no time. Some of the items that you will need to build your own solar panels are, solar cells, wood for the container and some plexiglass for the cover. Caulk should be used to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. You can use whatever type of wood you like but plywood is a great option for the back. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering. For many who believed it impossible or expensive to tackle this task it’s often surprising to see just how inexpensive building your own solar panel really can become. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
