What to Consider When Installing Solar Panels
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
Mounting a solar panel on top of your home allows you to receive solar energy that can be used for many purposes, such as lighting and heating your home and giving you hot water. This will allow you to save money on your electric and heating bills.
While there is a cost involved to actually install solar panels, this can be offset by rebates or tax breaks that are available in many places. Like many other forms of technology, solar panels are getting more affordable as they get ever more advanced and more people install them. Considering that you can also install solar panels yourself, you can save even more money and then be able to enjoy an energy source no one can control or take away from you as long as the sun is shining. All you need to do this really is a 12 V battery for storage and a solar panel to create electricity. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. Some institutions provide these batteries for free which is something you should look into if you are going to need a lot of them. Once the battery has stored enough electricity, you can use the energy by hooking up a power inverter to convert it to AC. To do this, you need to purchase sine wave converters to get the job done. To get 60 MHz electricity, like out of your outlet, you must purchase or have a true sine wave inverter. Of course, these models are more expensive than their modified counterparts, are well worth the cost.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder.
There has never been a more ideal time to use solar energy, as heating and other utility costs soar and the state of the economy remains uncertain. When you have solar panels, you can be reassured that you can power your home no matter how expensive utilities get, or even if services are disrupted.
