Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
In the future solar energy will be the main source our consumable energy. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. For wiring made easy, try to find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
Your climate and how much sunlight you receive are important factors to consider before getting solar panels. You have to choose between two kinds of solar panels: concentrating and non-concentrating solar collectors.
Concentrating solar collectors are panel that need to be positioned in such a way that they get the maximum possible amount of direct sunlight, meaning that they are the best option for areas that get a lot of sunlight year round. Non-concentrating solar collectors, on the other hand, don’t require as much direct sunlight to absorb energy, so this is a better choice if you live in a less sunny region. If you still aren’t sure what type is best for you, you always have the option of consulting a professional.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder. Your entire house, if you have enough solar panels, can actually be powered if positioned and used in the proper way. The cost of heating your home will dramatically reduce, especially if you use your solar panels to power your heating system.
