Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think
While we’re accustomed to many types of energy and technology, the only power source we couldn’t live without is the sun. We obviously depend on the sun to heat our planet, but there are actually many diverse ways this energy can be harnessed for our daily use. Luckily, homeowners can take advantage of this energy with the help of solar panel systems that convert this energy into electricity.
It is not that difficult to build your own solar panels. Do It Yourself skills are important if you are looking to build your own solar panel. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. When buying solar cells, try to find ones that already have tabs as it will make your life easier when you are doing the wiring. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place. You need to be able to hook up your solar panel, once it is finished, to a 12 V battery to store the energy. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. A large part of the cost of creating a solar solution for your electricity bill can be avoided by finding cheap or free batteries. So, these batteries store the power produced by solar panels, which can then be converted into AC power with the help of a power inverter so the electricity can be used by appliances. There are two types of power inverters available, namely true sine wave and modified sine wave. More than likely, you will want to use your appliances at home which requires purchasing a true sine wave inverter to convert electricity. Though more expensive, only the true sine wave device can create genuine AC electricity.
It is first necessary to realize that you will need a container in which to place your solar cells in order to create your own solar panels with the do it yourself method. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. It’s important that you remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled out of. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
Solar panel systems are most certainly the future of energy production for people’s homes, not just for the reason that they’re cost-effective, but also because they have a positive impact on the environment. So by installing them sooner rather than later you can save more money on your electricity bills.
