Read this article to learn how to build your own solar panel.
Many people are switching to solar energy because it is less expensive to develop and its energy source comes from the sun. Well, not for the next 4 billion years at least, which is how long the sun is expected to live. Low cost energy can definitely originate from solar panels, especially if you can work with companies that offer rebates and rewards prior to installation. But how exactly do solar panels work? Well, read on to find out.
One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. The energy that solar cells produce from sunlight is electricity. The creation of electricity using sunlight happens when the rays of the sun hit the silicone solar cells making electricity manifest. It takes a great number of solar cells to create a solar panel that can generate enough electricity that is meaningful. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. However, you do need to be handy with a soldering iron and a saw, so if you aren’t really into DIY, maybe you should ask a friend who is for help. In order to create a solar panel at home you will need to have solar cells to mount into your wooden (or other) type of box in a collection format. Never let a naysayer tell you that these are hard to find, in today’s market just about anything you might need can be found on Ebay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. You still need a quality cell group that’s not damaged in order to maximize your energy output. If the solar cells you find on Ebay are rated at or below grade “B” avoid them. You can expect about 100 solar cells to produce approximately 100 watts of power and the average solar panel has 36 of these. Each solar cell costs about $2 so you won’t go broke on them.
With the DIY method of solar panel creation your will need to create a box for the solar cells to rest in groups within when the desired outcome is a solar panel. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. It’s important that you remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled out of. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. Your entire house, if you have enough solar panels, can actually be powered if positioned and used in the proper way. Likewise, solar panels can also be connected to the heating system and you can then heat your home with the help of solar power.
