Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
Solar panels are not that difficult to build at home. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. Some of the items that you will need to build your own solar panels are, solar cells, wood for the container and some plexiglass for the cover. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place.
This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Because the wood will shrink and expand with the weather, you should use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Your solar panel is almost complete, just mount your plexiglass with screws.
Solder on your diode before you attach it to batteries. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. Lastly make sure that you are not wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. Your entire house, if you have enough solar panels, can actually be powered if positioned and used in the proper way. The cost of heating your home will dramatically reduce, especially if you use your solar panels to power your heating system.
