Building your own solar panel can be easy.
Undoubtedly, solar energy is the future. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
Solar panels are not that difficult to build at home. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. For wiring made easy, try to find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place. An extra 12 V car battery, and some proper wiring, is necessary to hook up to your solar panels to store the energy. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. You can save hundreds of dollars by finding low-cost or free batteries in your area. This electricity needs to be converted, so you will need to have a power inverter to convert the energy to be used around your house. This means you should get a true sine wave or modified energy converter. To get 60 MHz electricity, like out of your outlet, you must purchase or have a true sine wave inverter. It is a little more expensive than the modified sine wave, but it’s worth paying a little extra in the long run.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. Sometime during the night you could be wasting power. On the other hand, if you are using a charge controller then this step is not necessary.
It only takes some skills with tools and anyone can build a solar panel. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
