Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think
There are a variety of positives when it comes to solar panels, especially since they harness the natural elements on earth to provide us with green energy. The fact that they are a renewable energy source, meaning that it isn’t a resource that will run out, is an added bonus. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.
The solar energy panels are quite expensive initially, making this a major consideration for many, who may be skeptical of the savings over time. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells. Since you will need solar cells mounted together to create your homemade solar panel it’s important to have them on hand as well. Many people think it’s too hard to find solar cells but the reality is you can easily find them on Ebay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. You still need a quality cell group that’s not damaged in order to maximize your energy output. Ultimately, you want to have a solar cell that is graded above “grade B” level without ever going below that standard. You can usually expect to generate 100 watts of power from every 100 solar cells and there are somewhere around 36 of them in one solar panel. For an average cost of $2 each these cells can be called rather inexpensive compared to what you might have been thinking.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You’ll need wood inside the box that can hold the cells separate as well as a plexiglass covering for the box. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
It only takes some skills with tools and anyone can build a solar panel. Using your home built solar panels you could be powering your entire home with sunlight.
