It’s Not Difficult to Install Solar Panels
With the state of the global economy, more and more people are turning to solar energy. The expense of the solar panels would be offset by the savings on your electricity bill. The good news is that you can actually build your own solar panels for half the price. While this article can’t possibly provide a comprehensive guide to building your own solar panel, we will look at some of the most important aspects.
If you place a solar panel on your home’s roof, you instantly have a powerful source of energy that can provide heat and light for everything in your home. You’ll be able to reduce or even put an end to traditional utility bills as you can get solar power for free.
Depending on where you live, you can probably get a rebate or tax break when you install solar panels. Fortunately, as they get more popular and the technology advances, it’s getting cheaper all the time to install solar panels. Considering that you can also install solar panels yourself, you can save even more money and then be able to enjoy an energy source no one can control or take away from you as long as the sun is shining.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. Solar cells can be damaged if the wood shifts, that is why you need to use a dot of caulk. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Because wood is often easier to work with it is often the material of choice when building solar panels. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. In no time at all you can have your own solar panel up and running.
