Building your own solar panel can be easy.

Solar panels offer many benefits because they create clean energy by using the natural elements of our planet. In addition to this, they are a renewable energy source (which means it’s a resource that’ll never run out) which is an added bonus. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.

The main reason statistically speaking, that more people have not made the switch yet is the high cost of the panels for solar energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. In order for you to attach the solar cells and put the box together it may be necessary to have some wood glue and silicone caulk on hand.

Installing solar panels will not only benefit you in terms of savings, but it will also help the environment. Most of the processes that occur when producing electricity have quite a large negative impact on the environment due to waste and pollution. But when it comes to solar power there are no by-products or pollutants that will harm the environment. And because it uses the light from the sun to produce energy, it’s totally renewable so it won’t run out, whereas oil will. Even though the positive effects on the environment may not be fully visible right now, the environment will do better if more people use cleaner sources of energy. The long-term effects will be immense, and the next generations will see these effects. Because we are destroying our planet at such a fast rate, our grandchildren may never get to see a tree outdoors; they’d have to go to a museum.

You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. You will indeed need to have some do it yourself know how to complete this task but it’s not nearly as difficult as most people thought. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
