Building your own solar panel can be easy.

Many people are switching to solar energy because it is less expensive to develop and its energy source comes from the sun. Our very own sun will live on for over 4 billion years giving us more than enough energy for our lifetime. Several companies are now offering incentives that slash the costs of solar panels allowing most people to benefit from this cheap energy source. You should be wondering by now how these solar panels work? By the end of this article, you will understand.

It is not that difficult to build your own solar panels. You will have to have some “Do It Yourself” skills, to build your own solar panels. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.

Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Because the wood will shrink and expand with the weather, you should use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.

In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. To avoid wasting energy make sure that your solar panels are sending power to your batteries and not the other way around. On the other hand, if you are using a charge controller then this step is not necessary. You must place solar panels on top of your building or home so that they can receive sunlight and power your home at the same time. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
