Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think

No energy source created by humans can compare to the sun, which all life on this planet depends on for survival. Today, we’re learning more sophisticated ways to benefit from the sun; solar energy is often the cheapest way to provide energy for our homes. With easy to install solar panels, it’s possible to get heat and electricity you can use for all of your power requirements.

Solar cells are contained within boxes called solar panels. These solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. Silicone material is used when creating solar cells, a material that will actually generate electricity when sunlight is applied. People that purchase solar panels need to buy a lot of them because each cell only produces half of a volt of electricity. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. Whether you ask a family member for help, or if you are good at soldering wires, this is something you should really try to do.

This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Your solar panel is almost complete, just mount your plexiglass with screws.

If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. You can use whatever type of wood you like but plywood is a great option for the back. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.

The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. It will not take that long to get your solar panel up and running and powering you entire home with sunlight.
