The Positive Points About Solar Panel Systems
Solar panels have many advantages, especially since they provide clean energy by harnessing the natural elements of the planet. The fact that they are a renewable energy source, meaning that it isn’t a resource that will run out, is an added bonus. So if you have been pondering over whether to install solar panels or not you should continue reading this article to find out more.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You will also need some silicone caulk and wood glue to put the container together and attach the solar cells. Since you will need solar cells mounted together to create your homemade solar panel it’s important to have them on hand as well. Never let a naysayer tell you that these are hard to find, in today’s market just about anything you might need can be found on Ebay. You still need to be aware of what you are buying and don’t buy them just because you find them for less money. You need good quality cells that aren’t damaged because the better they are the more energy they produce. If the solar cells you find on Ebay are rated at or below grade “B” avoid them. You will generate about 100 watts of power for every 100 solar cells you have in your solar panel which usually averages around 36 per panel. For an average cost of $2 each these cells can be called rather inexpensive compared to what you might have been thinking.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. If you are serious about saving money, this is a project easy enough for even the novice to complete once the materials are rounded up and the patience to succeed is wrangled into production.
