The Benefits of Solar Panel Systems
In an effort to cut energy costs, more and more people are using solar energy. The expense of the solar panels would be offset by the savings on your electricity bill. Building your own solar panels for half the price is good news. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
Solar panels are not that difficult to build at home. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. To build your own solar panels you will need just a few basic items. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place. All you need to do this really is a 12 V battery for storage and a solar panel to create electricity. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. In fact, with a little research you can find these batteries very cheaply or even for free. This electricity must be converted into alternating current, which means you will need a power inverter to be able to use what you have stored. This means you should get a true sine wave or modified energy converter. To get 60 MHz electricity, like out of your outlet, you must purchase or have a true sine wave inverter. It is a little more expensive than the modified sine wave, but it’s worth paying a little extra in the long run.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. Having your batteries power your solar panels is a waste of energy. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. It’s really no harder than knowing what materials you’ll need, obtaining them before you begin and having the patience to complete the task.
