Solar Panel Systems – The Benefits of Using Them
The sun is amazing, especially considering that the energy it puts out is so powerful that the amount our planet absorbs in one hour is enough to cover the energy needs of our planet for one year. Solar energy is one of the most practical and economical forms of energy when we know how to take advantage of it. With easy to install solar panels, it’s possible to get heat and electricity you can use for all of your power requirements.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. When buying solar cells, try to find ones that already have tabs as it will make your life easier when you are doing the wiring. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
You’ll not only benefit from saving money, but it’s also good for the environment. Most of the electricity being produced today is done through processes that have a significantly negative impact on the environment, through waste and pollution. On the flip side, producing electricity with solar panels is good for the environment, as there are no by-products or negative consequences for the environment. Plus, since it uses sunlight to make electricity, it is a renewable energy source, in other words it isn’t a resource that can be depleted, like oil. Even though the positive effects on the environment may not be fully visible right now, the environment will do better if more people use cleaner sources of energy. The effects in the long-term will be incredible and your children and grandchildren will feel the effects. At the current rate we’re going at, the future generations won’t see much of the wonderful environment we have today because we’re doing such a good job of killing it off.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Use solder to connect the individual cells to one another after mounting is complete.
There has never been a more ideal time to use solar energy, as heating and other utility costs soar and the state of the economy remains uncertain. Solar power can free you from depending on external conditions for your power needs, so that no matter what happens you’ll have a cost free way to get energy.
