Understanding How Solar Panels Work

To cut cost, more and more people are turning to solar energy. The expense of the solar panels would be offset by the savings on your electricity bill. If you build your own solar panels you could save up to half the cost. While this article can’t possibly provide a comprehensive guide to building your own solar panel, we will look at some of the most important aspects.

Undoubtedly one of the best benefits of installing solar panels is the fact that you’ll be making your own energy, so you won’t need to rely on the electric grid for power. This means that you may be able to drastically cut your electricity bills, but at the very least you’ll be able to cut them down a bit. In addition to this you may also be able to get paid for any extra electricity you produce, as the government purchases it in some areas. But even if this doesn’t happen where you live, you’ll still make big savings from installing solar panels.

Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.

You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Because wood is often easier to work with it is often the material of choice when building solar panels. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will also need to put some wood inside the box to hold the cells and plexiglass to cover the box. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other.

When you look at economic conditions and how expensive oil and other traditional energy sources are getting, doesn’t it makes sense to seek alternatives? In this day and age, you can feel safer knowing that your energy needs don’t depend on things like oil, gas or coal being affordable or even available at all.
