Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
No energy source created by humans can compare to the sun, which all life on this planet depends on for survival. We obviously depend on the sun to heat our planet, but there are actually many diverse ways this energy can be harnessed for our daily use. Luckily, homeowners can take advantage of this energy with the help of solar panel systems that convert this energy into electricity.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. When buying solar cells, try to find ones that already have tabs as it will make your life easier when you are doing the wiring. Before you glue your solar panels in place you will have to solder tab on, if you are unable to find panels that have the tabs on them.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
It’s not hard to build solar panels yourself, as you could get all the materials you need at local stores or online. The most important component of your solar panel will be the solar cell, so you need to make sure you are buying good quality units. The better the quality, the more power they can produce.
For every 100 watts of electricity you require, you’ll need about 80 solar cells. The size of your solar panels and how many of them you’ll need will depend on how much power you want to get out of them. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
