Understanding How Solar Panels Work
In the future solar energy will be the main source our consumable energy. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
It is not that difficult to build your own solar panels. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. You will need some equipment as well as solar panels, wood for the container and plexiglass for the cover. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. If you can find solar cells that already have the tabs on them it will make wiring them up easier. Otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
The kind of solar panels you get will depend on where you live, as the climate and amount of sunlight received varies from place to place. This is because there are two types of solar panels, namely concentrating solar collectors and non-concentrating collectors.
If you live in an area that gets quite a bit of sunlight throughout the year, you should get a concentrating solar collector, which can absorb a great deal of direct sunlight. Non-concentrating solar collectors are able to absorb sunlight both directly and from reflection, making them ideal for areas that receive a lot less direct sunlight. You can always consult with an expert if you don’t know which type of solar panel would be appropriate for you.
The diodes should be soldered before you attach your panels to the batteries. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. On the other hand, if you are using a charge controller then this step is not necessary.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
