To build your own solar panel read this article.
The future of solar energy is certain to be long and adventurous. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
The solar energy panels are quite expensive initially, making this a major consideration for many, who may be skeptical of the savings over time. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
Solder on your diode before you attach it to batteries. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. To avoid wasting energy make sure that your solar panels are sending power to your batteries and not the other way around. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller.
There has never been a more ideal time to use solar energy, as heating and other utility costs soar and the state of the economy remains uncertain. If things do take a turn for the worst, having a renewable energy source that is free and allows you to be independent from the public grid might just prove invaluable.
