What to Consider When Installing Solar Panels
Solar panels provide us with green energy because they use natural elements of the earth, which is why there are many benefits. An added bonus is the fact that they’re a renewable energy source, so it’s not a resource that will run out. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may want to consider having wood glue and silicone caulking handy in order to be able to assemble your wooden box and attach your solar panel cells to it.
Your climate and how much sunlight you receive are important factors to consider before getting solar panels. Whether you get a concentrating solar collector or a non-concentrating collector will depend on your needs.
If you get enough sunlight all year, a concentrating solar collector would be ideal for you, as these can make good use of direct sunlight. If, however, you only get a limited amount of sunlight, a non-concentrating solar collector would be a better choice, as these can also absorb reflected sunlight. You could have a company that specializes in installing solar panels advise you on which kind is best for your home if you’re not sure.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Use solder to connect the individual cells to one another after mounting is complete.
All it takes to build your own solar panel is a little skill with the tools. So, you can soon have your own solar panel up and running and you might even end up powering your entire home with sunlight.
