The Upside of Using Solar Panels
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. It is an energy source that will last another 4 billion years according to experts and is completely clean, meaning that it has no negative impact on the environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. You will also need some silicone caulk and wood glue to put the container together and attach the solar cells.
In addition to you being able to save money you will also be helping the environment. Because many of the methods of producing electricity these days create a lot of waste and pollution, they are not good for the health of the environment. On the other hand, producing energy with a solar power system doesn’t harm the environment at all and there are no by-products either. And because it uses the light from the sun to produce energy, it’s totally renewable so it won’t run out, whereas oil will. The positive effects on the environment might not be visible right away but the more people use clean energy sources, the better the environment will fair. The long-term effects will be immense, and the next generations will see these effects. But if we keep polluting how we are now, our grandchildren won’t be able to see trees outside, they’ll be in museums because we’re doing a good job of destroying our planet.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. It’s important that you remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled out of. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. You will indeed need to have some do it yourself know how to complete this task but it’s not nearly as difficult as most people thought. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
