You Might Think Building A Solar Panel Is Difficult, Think Again
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Solar energy is a source of energy that will be around for billions of years according to experts because it’s clean, causing no negative impact on the environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. In order for you to attach the solar cells and put the box together it may be necessary to have some wood glue and silicone caulk on hand.
In addition to you being able to save money you will also be helping the environment. Most of the electricity being produced today is done through processes that have a significantly negative impact on the environment, through waste and pollution. On the other hand, producing energy with a solar power system doesn’t harm the environment at all and there are no by-products either. And because it uses the sunlight to create energy it’s renewable, meaning it cannot become depleted. The positive effects on the environment might not be visible right away but the more people use clean energy sources, the better the environment will fair. The long-term effects will be immense, and the next generations will see these effects. At the current rate we’re going at, the future generations won’t see much of the wonderful environment we have today because we’re doing such a good job of killing it off.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You’ll need wood inside the box that can hold the cells separate as well as a plexiglass covering for the box. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. Use solder to connect the individual cells to one another after mounting is complete. Your entire house, if you have enough solar panels, can actually be powered if positioned and used in the proper way. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
