To build your own solar panel read this article.
In an effort to cut energy costs, more and more people are using solar energy. Some people may be thinking that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, but the expense will be quickly offset by savings made on the electricity bill. The good news is that you can actually build your own solar panels for half the price. Use this article as a guide to building your own solar panels.
The main reason statistically speaking, that more people have not made the switch yet is the high cost of the panels for solar energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. You can use whatever type of wood you like but plywood is a great option for the back. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering. For many who believed it impossible or expensive to tackle this task it’s often surprising to see just how inexpensive building your own solar panel really can become. This is a task that only requires patience, materials and perseverance to succeed in making your own solar panel to save energy.
