How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
The sun is amazing, especially considering that the energy it puts out is so powerful that the amount our planet absorbs in one hour is enough to cover the energy needs of our planet for one year. Solar energy is one of the most practical and economical forms of energy when we know how to take advantage of it. You can easily meet most of your energy needs by installing a solar panel system in your home.
First of all, solar panels are receptacles for solar cells that you will use. The conversion of simple sunlight by the solar cells is how they create electricity. The creation of electricity using sunlight happens when the rays of the sun hit the silicone solar cells making electricity manifest. One solar cell can generate about 0.5 volts of power, which is why a solar panel is made up of numerous solar cells. The thought of being able to eliminate your electric bill is what causes many people to make solar panels on their own with the hope of replacing all of their electrical needs. However, you do need to be handy with a soldering iron and a saw, so if you aren’t really into DIY, maybe you should ask a friend who is for help.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
The diodes should be soldered before you attach your panels to the batteries. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. Having your batteries power your solar panels is a waste of energy. This is not a necessary step when you choose to use a charge controller instead. While you will need to have some DIY skills to be able to make your own solar panels, it isn’t as difficult as many people think. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
