You Might Think Building A Solar Panel Is Difficult, Think Again
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. You will also need some silicone caulk and wood glue to put the container together and attach the solar cells.
Your climate and how much sunlight you receive are important factors to consider before getting solar panels. The two main varieties of solar panels are concentrating and non-concentrating solar collectors; the best kind for you depends on where you live.
Concentrating solar collectors are panel that need to be positioned in such a way that they get the maximum possible amount of direct sunlight, meaning that they are the best option for areas that get a lot of sunlight year round. Non-concentrating solar collectors, on the other hand, don’t require as much direct sunlight to absorb energy, so this is a better choice if you live in a less sunny region. You can always consult with an expert if you don’t know which type of solar panel would be appropriate for you.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Because wood is often easier to work with it is often the material of choice when building solar panels. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. You will also need to put some wood inside the box to hold the cells and plexiglass to cover the box. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. So, you can soon have your own solar panel up and running and you might even end up powering your entire home with sunlight.
