Read this article to learn how to build your own solar panel.
The future of solar energy is certain to be long and adventurous. Where energy is concerned this “green energy” known as solar energy will likely outlive many other energy sources according to experts and it’s ability to avoid negative impact on the environment makes it that much more appealing to those of us who are environmentally conscious. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. You will have to have some “Do It Yourself” skills, to build your own solar panels. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place.
The container for your solar panel is simply a box with a Plexiglas front, which will allow sunlight to flow in but will ensure that the cells are protected. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. Solar cells can be damaged if the wood shifts, that is why you need to use a dot of caulk. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
The diodes should be soldered before you attach your panels to the batteries. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. Sometime during the night you could be wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller.
All it takes to build your own solar panel is a little skill with the tools. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
