Read this article to learn how to build your own solar panel.

The sun is by far the most powerful source of energy for our planet; did you know that in only an hour the earth can receive enough energy from the sun to meet our power needs for a whole year? While this form of energy arrives as heat and light, that doesn’t mean it can’t be converted into a usable form of energy. Luckily, homeowners can take advantage of this energy with the help of solar panel systems that convert this energy into electricity.

Solar cells are contained within boxes called solar panels. These solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. The process itself involves photons hitting electrons in the silicone material on the solar cells, which become electricity. It takes a great number of solar cells to create a solar panel that can generate enough electricity that is meaningful. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. DIY experts will probably have no problem at all creating their very own solar panels at home as long as you have a soldering iron. You will need to have solar cells since making a solar panel isn’t much more than mounting solar cells in a container of some type. Many people think it’s too hard to find solar cells but the reality is you can easily find them on Ebay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. It is imperative that you get a quality cell capable of maximizing your energy output for greater cost savings and energy production. Therefore, you want to avoid any solar cells that are “grade B” or lower. You will generate about 100 watts of power for every 100 solar cells you have in your solar panel which usually averages around 36 per panel. You may be surprised to find out that these cells aren’t as expensive as you might have thought, in fact only about $2 each.

Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells.

The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
