Solar Panel Systems – The Benefits of Using Them
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Using a solar panel system means you will be self reliant for your power, so you won’t need to rely on the public power grid, which is an excellent benefit. This means that you will be able to greatly reduce your electricity bills and even completely slash them in some cases. You can also earn some cash as in many areas the government will purchase any additional energy you create. Regardless of whether this is something that operates in your area, you will be able to make enormous savings by installing a solar panel system.
The container for your solar panel is simply a box with a Plexiglas front, which will allow sunlight to flow in but will ensure that the cells are protected. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Because wood is often easier to work with it is often the material of choice when building solar panels. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other.
The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. It will not take that long to get your solar panel up and running and powering you entire home with sunlight.
