What to Consider When Installing Solar Panels
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. It is an energy source that will last another 4 billion years according to experts and is completely clean, meaning that it has no negative impact on the environment. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
Solar panel systems aren’t just a great way to save money, they are also a good way of helping to protect the environment. Because many of the methods of producing electricity these days create a lot of waste and pollution, they are not good for the health of the environment. On the other hand, the production of solar power has no by-products or any negative impact on the environment whatsoever. And because it uses the light from the sun to produce energy, it’s totally renewable so it won’t run out, whereas oil will. The positive effects on the environment might not be visible right away but the more people use clean energy sources, the better the environment will fair. The long-term effects will be immense, and the next generations will see these effects. But if we keep polluting how we are now, our grandchildren won’t be able to see trees outside, they’ll be in museums because we’re doing a good job of destroying our planet.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder. Conventional installation of solar panels requires positioning them on top of your living quarters, and using that electricity for your appliances and other needs. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
