Solar Panels – Why And How They Function
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. The energy that solar cells produce from sunlight is electricity. The creation of electricity using sunlight happens when the rays of the sun hit the silicone solar cells making electricity manifest. It takes a great number of solar cells to create a solar panel that can generate enough electricity that is meaningful. The thought of being able to eliminate your electric bill is what causes many people to make solar panels on their own with the hope of replacing all of their electrical needs. However, you do need to be handy with a soldering iron and a saw, so if you aren’t really into DIY, maybe you should ask a friend who is for help. You need to be able to hook up your solar panel, once it is finished, to a 12 V battery to store the energy. Probably the safest route to go is to use a lead acid battery which can easily store the charge. In fact, with a little research you can find these batteries very cheaply or even for free. Storing electricity is only part of the process; you must convert this electricity into AC to be used at home or in your garage. This means you should get a true sine wave or modified energy converter. A true sine wave inverter is the only device that will give you the same AC electricity that comes out of your sockets. It is a little more expensive than the modified sine wave, but it’s worth paying a little extra in the long run.
The diodes should be soldered before you attach your panels to the batteries. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. To avoid wasting energy make sure that your solar panels are sending power to your batteries and not the other way around. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary. You will indeed need to have some do it yourself know how to complete this task but it’s not nearly as difficult as most people thought. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
