Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think

In an effort to cut energy costs, more and more people are using solar energy. The expense of the solar panels would be offset by the savings on your electricity bill. It will cost you about half the price to build your own solar panels. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.

One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. In some scientific way, electricity is created by the solar cells from sunlight. The rays of the sun which strike the solar cells, which are made of silicone, will generate electricity upon contact. Only a half of a volt of power per cell is generated from sunlight necessitating the use of many solar panels to provide electricity. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. For those of you that are not very handy with tools, it is recommended that you obtain help from your family that can help you with sawing and soldering wires.

This plexiglass topped container serves as protection from the elements for the cells as well as allowing unobstructed sunlight to reach the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.

Batteries will need to be connected and you may want to solder a diode first. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. This is not a necessary step when you choose to use a charge controller instead.

Undoubtedly, solar panel systems are the future for energy production for the home due to their cost-effectiveness over the long term as well as the fact that they are good for the environment. So by installing them sooner rather than later you can save more money on your electricity bills.
