Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. Where energy is concerned this “green energy” known as solar energy will likely outlive many other energy sources according to experts and it’s ability to avoid negative impact on the environment makes it that much more appealing to those of us who are environmentally conscious. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
The main reason statistically speaking, that more people have not made the switch yet is the high cost of the panels for solar energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. In order for you to attach the solar cells and put the box together it may be necessary to have some wood glue and silicone caulk on hand.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. To make sure that no moisture gets in make sure that you fill the hole with caulk after you have pushed the wires through. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells.
It only takes some skills with tools and anyone can build a solar panel. Using your home built solar panels you could be powering your entire home with sunlight.
