Solar Panel Systems – The Benefits of Using Them

No energy source created by humans can compare to the sun, which all life on this planet depends on for survival. We obviously depend on the sun to heat our planet, but there are actually many diverse ways this energy can be harnessed for our daily use. By installing solar panels in your home, you can have a very practical and inexpensive form of energy that has many uses.

A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. You may want to consider having wood glue and silicone caulking handy in order to be able to assemble your wooden box and attach your solar panel cells to it.

The container for your solar panel is simply a box with a Plexiglas front, which will allow sunlight to flow in but will ensure that the cells are protected. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.

Solder on your diode before you attach it to batteries. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary. Solar panels are generally mounted on the roofs of homes or buildings and can be used to power anything from a single appliance to your entire home. Likewise, solar panels can also be connected to the heating system and you can then heat your home with the help of solar power.
