Building your own solar panel can be easy.
More and more people are turning to solar energy in an effort to cut costs, especially with the current state of the global economy. However, some are worried that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, even though it is an expense that would quickly be offset by savings made on the electricity bill. If you build your own solar panels you could save up to half the cost. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Because the wood will shrink and expand with the weather, you should use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
A nifty device that sits between the battery and the solar panel is called the charge controller. These devices will prevent overcharging the batteries and ensuring the voltage levels are correct. A charge controller will also ensure that no power flows out of the batteries and back into the solar panel, which would be a waste. They also prevent overcharging of your batteries which can happen if they are not used. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
