Make Your Home Energy Efficient With Solar Panels
To cut cost, more and more people are turning to solar energy. The expense of the solar panels would be offset by the savings on your electricity bill. The good news is that you can actually build your own solar panels for half the price. Use this article as a guide to building your own solar panels.
A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest design for a solar panel is using a wood container, which means that you will need some simple woodworking tools like a saw, a drill and a screwdriver, which you probably already own. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment. Since you will need solar cells mounted together to create your homemade solar panel it’s important to have them on hand as well. Most people probably think it’s quite difficult to get hold of these but they can easily be found on eBay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. You need good quality cells that aren’t damaged because the better they are the more energy they produce. Ultimately, you want to have a solar cell that is graded above “grade B” level without ever going below that standard. You can expect about 100 solar cells to produce approximately 100 watts of power and the average solar panel has 36 of these. You may be surprised to find out that these cells aren’t as expensive as you might have thought, in fact only about $2 each.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. Your entire house, if you have enough solar panels, can actually be powered if positioned and used in the proper way. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
